The Politehnica University of Timisoara and the Welding Association of Romania, under the aegis of the Romanian Technical University (ALUT), organized a meeting of metalworkers (design and execution) and welders. For the first time, the specialists in the two camps, "forced" to collaborate, sat down at the same table to harmonize the two areas and highlight the link between them. It also emphasized the importance of knowing certain notions in both areas, so that the resulting product is optimal (for example, in the design phase, the designer must have no welding technology concept to avoid problems during execution).

In Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Romania, specialists with international recognition in the field of metallic and welding construction, both in industry and in higher education, gathered at the Central Library of the Politehnica University of Timisoara, at a meeting opened by the UPT rector, Viorel-Aurel Serban. He stressed the existence of a long tradition of welding education in Timisoara, initiated by Academician Corneliu Mikloşi. The Department of Welding Technology, founded in 1953, was unique in our country until 1976, when similar chairs appear at other universities in our country.

In the guest speakers it was emphasized that the emergence of new efficient materials, innovative welding processes, the complexity of the new European welding standards, the high demands on the quality of the welded joints, while ensuring their safety in operation, the aesthetic forms more particularly, the pressure of short execution times leads to the need for a multidisciplinary approach to welding, as well as the re-evaluation of education in this direction. The collaboration between the architect, the welding metal designer and the welding specialist is now essential.

Discussions at the round table focused on the need to highlight the role of the welding specialist from the initial design phase, to harmonize the concept of design with welding technology, to promote welded joints in relation to bolt joints, the need to develop documentary materials related to new steel grades and new welding technologies, clear and simple recommendations for choice of materials according to European standards, designer's need to justify the choice of steel grade, the obligation of design and welding specialists to justify from the beginning the execution class, the need to continuously improve welding technologies to improve cyclic loading and corrosion behavior. Concerning research and development, has been highlighted the need for the development of innovative and more economical welding technologies, the wider use of modern technologies for welding limited welded steels, and the implementation of welding simulation programs.

An important role is assigned to the architect; currently, the appearance and shape of metallic constructions become - at the demand of society - more and more complicated for the printing of an emblematic character in many of the new executed constructions.

The meeting also proposed to draw up recommendations on welding education, ensuring appropriate welders' qualification, inclusion of welding structures in the execution teams of persons responsible for welding coordination, as well as persons responsible for welding inspection . Not least, has been raised the issue of implementing a harmonized international qualification system for welders.

The meeting has proposed to debate the raised problems and to establish general recommendations in the field of conception and execution of welded metal constructions, as well as of the welding education, a resolution in this regard was discussed, to be finalized and approved in the most shortly thereafter.
